Pharmacy and medicines optimisation is a key focus for the Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR) ICS and is fully integrated into our developing ICS framework. This is evidenced through the establishment of the Integrated Medicines Optimisation Design Group (IMODG) as one of nine key design groups within the system, responsible for developing and delivering the system operational plan.

This plan sets out our ambition for pharmacy and medicines optimisation and has been developed collaboratively by members of the IMODG with wider system support and engagement. This is the first iteration and it is recognised that further work is required to engage outside of the design group and further develop and refine this plan, including agreeing appropriate timescales and outcome measures.

The broad priority areas identified are those supported by our IMODG sub-groups, namely:

  • Pharmacy workforce
  • Antimicrobials
  • Polypharmacy
  • Opiates
  • Ensuring medicines value

In addition, there are established areas of focus e.g. medicines safety, respiratory prescribing, support to care homes that are outlined in this plan but sit outside the sub-group structure.

As part of the process of developing this plan we have brought people together from all sectors of the ICS. In order to move forward, it is agreed in principle that a proposal will be developed to appoint to an interim ICS Chief Pharmacist role. This will create capacity and authority to further develop our system IPMO plan alongside scoping the longer term requirements for the post.
